YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (YDP)

YDP is a strength and conditioning program specifically designed for the proper development and maturation of young athletes. Based on current science and research, our YDP follows many of the same principles and processes laid out in Sport Canada’s Long Term Athletic Development program, which is used by our countries major sporting committees (hockey, baseball, soccer, football, basketball, etc). Working in conjunction with Canada’s Athletic Plan, and the most up to date training principles, YDP makes proper development and learning the top priority.

THE RIGHT SKILLS AT THE RIGHT AGE

Our training methods and programming ensure that your child is learning the right skills at the right age and building the optimal foundation of abilities in order to maximize their potential for greater success in the future; whether it be on the field or in the classroom. Our Youth Development Program exposes young athletes to a wide variety of skills and training to ensure that their development is not overlooked.

SMALL GROUP ENVIRONMENT

We use a small group environment (no more than 1:8) to help build social skills and keep the atmosphere fun and competitive as well. Every aspect of athleticism will be worked on with age/skill level appropriate exercises and drills that will continuously challenge and stimulate progress but not overwhelm or become dangerous.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • Supervised training program specific to the development and maturation of young athletes
  • Improved motor skill development contributing to sports performance
  • Low ratio of coaches to athletes (max 1:8)
  • Improved cardiovascular risk profile
  • Age/skill appropriate training methods that focus on skills/learning vs performance gains
  • Improved psycho social well-being
  • Increased resistance to sports related injuries

THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Many parents believe that resistance training is unsafe and even dangerous for children, and this belief is causing many of our young athletes to lose out on valuable development. According to virtually every research study pertaining to “Youth Resistance Training”, this belief could not be further from the truth. The fact is that during regular play (sports, schoolyard, or playground) children experience far greater stresses on their muscles, bones, and tendons than in a well supervised and controlled training program.

Today’s sporting culture places too much emphasis on winning and early specialization towards one sport and the associated skills. Not only is this leading to a decline in performance, and participation in sports it has a dramatic effect on the overall development of children. With out proper development and skill acquisition certain abilities (speed, strength, power, coordination, etc) suffer. Because too much importance is place on too few skills, athletic performance will begin to decline with age and the chance of overuse injuries increases.

As athletes progress into more advanced levels of sport, physical attributes become more and more important. At the highest levels of sport skill levels are very similar among these advanced athletes, it is their physical abilities that set the top tier players apart.

With properly educated and certified coaching, youth training programs provide a safe learning environment that greatly reduces the chance of injury while still providing the benefit of physical development, increases in performance, and proper lifestyle habits that reduce the risks of health problems later in life. Athletic performance relies on many different skills working together to produce fluid, powerful and coordinated movements, and all these skills require carefully planned and monitored programs in order to be properly developed. Youth Development Programs ensure this development.
